Yarra Ranges and The Dandenongs

Only an hour east of Melbourne, the mountains emerge from the city's volcanic plains, marking the start of the Great Diving Range, forested hills that continue almost unbroken for 3,500 km, to the northern tip of Queensland. This is home to Melbourne's world-famous lyrebirds. At night the forest comes alive with wild animals and there are places to see platypus, wombats and one of the our most endearing animals, the very taciturn Greater Glider.

Southern Port Phillip Bay, Queenscliff & Surrounds

Only an hour and a half from Melbourne, the Bay meets the ocean. This is the playground of endemic dolphins, adolescent seals and majestic albatross. Swimming with dolphins, seals and gannets is just part of the fun for adults and kids. Take a boat trip and discover how 30,000 tonne tankers navigate Port Phillip Heads, one of the world's most treacherous shipping passages. Safely navigate 'The Rip', a mass of ferocious, turbulent water, then return to your accommodation minutes away. There are great places to eat, beautiful beach walks and a wide variety of activities that will easily keep you occupied all weekend.
